A Scholar's Viewpoint on BLM (Black Lives Matter)

Written By: Rohit Kandi

Black Lives Matter. What a strong, powerful three words. I am truly proud of what our world has done to create change. From Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches to the George Floyd protests, our nation has changed immensely. I believe that it is good that we, as teenagers, get to experience this historic moment. It is now more important than ever to understand what is going on in our society to help create a positive impact on the world. With the current advancements in technology, it is now easier to record instances of police brutality/racism. Because of this, these matters have been brought to the attention of society. Now is the time for reform. Due to the innocent shootings of African Americans, many people desire a new structure in the police department. It is important for police officers to maintain their composure during tense situations. In addition, officers must be respectful of race and stay calm. In addition, although there is an ongoing pandemic at the time when this blog is being written, BLM seems to be a bigger issue. COVID-19 will eventually be resolved with the presence of a vaccine, but equality among all people may never be solved. This problem is solved would only be present in a "utopia", a perfect world. It is important to express our thoughts and ideas in order to spread a message to general topic. As said by Martin Luther King,

"There comes a time when silence is betrayal."

Based on my understanding, this quote emphasizes that it is OUR RESPONSIBILITY to take action on this important matter. It is important to go out on the streets, sign petitions, and spread the message. Protesting helps to bring this matter to importance. The low socio-economic status present among the majority of African Americans is uncalled for. Due to this status, most of these people are forced to commit wrongful actions. That is why the demographic for prisoners is mainly African American. It is important to create equal opportunities in which everyone can benefit and succeed. By taking this one step at a time, hopefully, our society can create an equal world.
