In the presence of the Black Lives Matter movement that spread throughout the globe in a matter of days, many challenges were brought to the world. There were many influences for people to join the physical protests worldwide and major concerns brought on about the ramifications of rioting and looting. This has caused two apparent sides to the idea of BLM protesting. While many people believe that during a global pandemic, grouping up and standing up for what you believe in is essential for change, many more decide not to endanger their health. Yet there are large groups of people against the idea as a whole due to the extreme rioting.
It is necessary to understand that the presence of the media is an important part of the movement as more and more people are getting access to world affairs and learning about protesting. While the media supports the stance of Black Lives Matter, the majority of the content published is about the destruction and chaotic events present during the protests. This is due to the fact that the people rioting instead of peacfully protesting bring attention to themselves. This news coverage of the rioters provides a negative viewpoint of the protest while the media usually thinks positively of the message. The concept of rioters going to mask themselves in the protesting can be shown with the following statement by theconversation.com:
While thousands of people have gathered to express their outrage peacefully, some demonstrations have been marred by vandalism and violent clashes with police.
This shows that the protesting gives an outlet for those who seek violence and physical action. It acts as a safe barrier for them to do as they please without consequences. This is a major issue as it gives a bad rep for protestinf and with the media’s attention going to them, it magnifies the opposition. This issue can be diminished as people begin to learn the truth and learn that protesters don’t want to cause harm, they just want to spread their message. Te more people who understand this on both sides, the better the result will be in the long run on the issue of BLM.
